DRIVING FORCES OF INNOVATION
Innovation, unlike invention, implies actual implementation and use of technology in a way that changes the status quo. The question therefore arises: what is technology being called upon to change in the world?
In this section we identify 4 main innovation drivers:
- A shift from resource exploitation to the sustainable use of resources;
- A dramatic focus on technology that mitigates climate change and helps humankind adapt to its consequences;
- Policy & regulation will increasingly turn to technology to resolve conflicting aims, broadly speaking the tension between economic growth on the one hand and resource sustainability and climate change mitigation on the other;
- Last but not least, the digitalization phenomenon can be understood as a self-reinforcing feedback loop where the relentless drive for efficiency has itself given rise to game changing technology.
